Finding a New Home for Your Pet

Posted July 31, 2009 by admin in Pet Advice | No comments yet

Find a New Home For Your PetSometimes there are situations that will occur that will make it necessary to find a new home for your pet.   When you brought your pet into your home, you made a commitment to that dog or cat to take care of it.  For this reason, the decision to no longer keep the pet should not be taken lightly.

Many people get rid of their pets for reasons that could be easily remedied.  Before making the decision to find a new home for your pet, be sure that the problem cannot be corrected with training.  If a move is the problem, make sure that housing that will accept your pet is absolutely not available.

If you find that you have no other choice but to find a new home for your pet, here are a couple guidelines to follow.

NEVER Offer “Free to a good home”

There are some very sick people in the world.  Some of these people troll dog classifieds and online pet classifieds looking for owners that are giving their pets away for free.  These people act as if they are looking for a loving companion, but they are really looking for animals to use in horrible ways such as to train fighting dogs or to sell to laboratories.

Some of these people will even bring children along to make you feel like your pet is being adopted by a wonderful family. The ONLY way to make sure this doesn’t happen to your pet is to charge a small rehoming fee to the person who adopts your pet.

Application

Along with charging a fee to whomever wants to adopt your pet, you should also follow the protocol of dog shelters and some dog breeders by asking potential adopters to fill out a short application.  Ask about other pets, check vet references and, depending on the type of pet, pay a visit to their home to be sure they have an adequate yard and fencing in place.

This may seem like a lot of trouble for a pet adoption, but you owe it to your pet to make sure he goes to a home that will love him and can take good care of him.
